Litter Update: Can signs make a difference?

You may have recently spotted these two signs at either end of Tattenhall Lane about a mile apart.

They’re printed on weatherproof board (the sort of thing used by estate agents for For Sale boards) mounted on a couple of long since abandoned road sign frames.

Things have moved on a bit since the earlier post about litter ….

These signs have been in place for around 4 weeks.

Have they made a difference?

At first I thought that the rubbish was just hiding in the longer grass and flowers as the verges grow.

But no it’s mostly gone!

There were a few drinks containers (energy drinks and fast food soft drains) from the hard core perpetrators but generally it’s so very much better.

It’s all unscientific but it seems that appealing to peoples’ better nature actually does make a positive difference.

So what next?

  • Firstly … move the signs around to keep it fresh.  Next destination is Newton Lane for the many passing visitors to the Ice Cream Farm, and

  • Secondly … how about an awareness campaign at the point of sale of commonly littered stuff such as energy drinks, coffee cups and fast food?
